Sunrise Layers on the Skyline

This photograph came from a birthday trip into the Blue Ridge Mountains. I hadn't been out photographing in a while and decided to head up Route 33, away from Charlottesville, to see what the morning would bring.

I knew the timing would be right for sunrise, but I didn't know where I would find a place to stop. As I drove along the mountain, I came around a bend and saw something I couldn't pass up. The light, the fog, and the layers of mountains were all coming together. I quickly found a place to pull over and captured this moment looking out across the valley.

From the ground, we often see the deep reds of a sunrise without realizing how much more is happening above us. But from high in the mountains, the sunrise reveals something entirely different. The sky fills with layers of orange, gold, pink, red, and yellow, each becoming more vivid as the sun begins to rise. The distant mountain ridges add depth to the scene, but it's those incredible layers of color stretching across the sky that make the moment so special.

It was one of those mornings when being in the right place at the right time made all the difference.
